The Girl Who Ziplines

Even though I like to pretend that I'm the most bad ass girl on the planet who can do anything, I know that sometimes it's just not too. Thankfully, a couple weekends ago that was not true. My friend came up with this brilliant idea (sarcasm) to celebrate her birthday in style, now, me being me, I'm like whooo party, drinks, shots, somewhere along those lines. I didn't think for two seconds as I was stepping into her car that she was going to mention the one thing that I am terrified to do...zipline. Now, I'm not afraid to zipline, nor, did I ever give a thought to be afraid of zip lining, I just thought, holy fuck, I'm afraid of heights, this is NOT going to end well. Seriously, is it just me but it never really hits you that you're about to willingly float across the sky on a damn line, connected to another line and some other thingys until the you have to go through a safety course. That's terrifying when they're like "don't connect this rope thingy to this rope thingy because it'd fall off and you'd fall off", as they were saying this, I peered down below and all I saw were rocks. Also, it didn't help that while standing in front of the orientation briefing, there were a bunch of signs for Habu snakes.  So, I kept thinking, either I'm going to fall to my death or a Habu snake is going to bite me. If you live where I like, you'd know that if a Habu snake bites you, you're most likely (99% chance) are going to die. It's so depressing.

What kills me about the zip lining place I went to, they make you do a little demonstration thing which skids across a two fit rope (as well as flat land) and then they're like, "okay strap yourselves up and head across a billion feet across the ocean). Like SERIOUSLY, I was freaking out. I kept thinking to myself, "I can't believe I spent forty five dollars to willingly glide across the sky on this thin ROPE". So, I pretty much pushed myself forward and let me tell you, it was EXHILARATING. I kept thinking, wow, this is amazing, I'm just floating across the sky, able to enjoy the breeze and the sunshine of the beautiful weather that we were experiencing that week. I've always been afraid of heights (and extremely dark blue waters like seriously, there's probably some unheard of shark in there, ready to eat themselves some dark meat) but once I did it, it was easy to continue doing it again and again. I absolutely loved it which is crazy to me, as much as I am afraid of heights, I'm the first person to go on a roller coaster (then regret it immediately afterwards), climb a mountain and maybe one day jump of out an airplane.

Also, for some strange reason after the zip lining course, there was an adventure course thing. I have NO idea why I didn't run in the other direction. It was tons of small little ropes to walk across, being thrown across the damn air into a net, I AM NOT EVEN JOKING, it was ridiculous. My heart rate went up, I was convinced for the billionth time of my day that I was going to die. Except this time I was like "this is legit" I was sending messages to my parents freaking out and they were like "seriously Ash, it's three in the morning and you're not going to die" like whatever, they didn't see what I went through. I almost died for real.

I can't believe my parents thought I was being overdramatic. I was AFRAID, okay. Anyway, anybody got any cool zip lining stories? The guy I'm currently seeing told me he went zip lining in Costa Rica into volcanos (or across) and into a waterfall, obviously, that trumps mine which was in a forest.

  1. I've always wanted to zip line...but I have these images of me smashing into a tree, and even though that probably won't happen, the image is enough to keep me away...

    1. It's definitely a must! I felt the same way and for some reason I would whirl around on the rope and land on my ass but it was good times!

  2. Well I'm glad you didn't die. I would want to do it but I don't like heights. I've also heard about Costa Rica a lot of people go there for nature/outdoors type adventures.

    1. Yeah, I think if you go to Costa Rica you have to be one of those people who are ready for some sort of jungle adventure but me being afraid of snakes prob won't be going.

  3. I went zip lining in Costa Rica too, but not into volcanos or anything- just through the forest like you. I thought I might die a couple of times too:)
